Public clouds are no longer equivalent

I agree with Joseph Heck — they never were, especially if we’re going to limit the discussion to the ‘REAL’ public clouds — not just VMWARE/other private clouds which have a nice UI layer.. they arent really cloud IMO.

Otherwise I couldnt agree more with your points — hybrid cloud isn’t a thing, it can never BE a thing if you want to achieve a level of usefullness out of cloud — beyond as you say, primitives. If that’s your aim — stick to on-premises IT.

I do like, and support, a multi-cloud architceture for workload differences. Azure have superior capability in the MS centric space, GCP in certain big data, machine learning and analytics areas and AWS are the market leader in pretty much everything else — by a significant margin.
